Rory Medcalf är statsvetare och chef för National Security College vid Australiens nationella universitet. Medcalf är en av de ledande tänkarna bakom begreppet om den Indopacifiska regionen, idén om att länderna kring Indiska oceanen och Stilla havet hänger samman säkerhetspolitiskt. I dag utgör regionen den viktigaste arenan för världens stormakter och är av växande strategisk betydelse för Sverige.
Australien har länge varit en nära allierad till USA, med omfattande samarbete inom ekonomi och säkerhet. Under senare år har Kinas framväxt i grunden påverkat Australien och dess närområde. Hur resonerar politiska beslutsfattare i Australien om behovet av att utveckla en fungerande relation med Kina, samtidigt som man vill bevara den centrala relationen med USA i en tid av ökad stormaktsrivalitet? Welcome to a public seminar with Rory Medcalf on how smaller states can safeguard their room for manoeuvre in relation to the major powers.
Professor Rory Medcalf, political scientist and head of the National Security College at the Australian National University. Medcalf is one of the leading thinkers behind the concept of the Indo-Pacific region, the idea that the countries surrounding the Indian and Pacific Oceans are linked together in economic and security related terms. Today, this region constitutes the most important arena for the world’s great powers and is of increasing strategic significance for Europe and Sweden.
Australia has long been a close ally of the United States, with extensive cooperation in economics and security. In recent years the rise of China has profoundly affected Australia and its surrounding region. How do political decision-makers in Australia view the need to build a functional relationship with China while preserving their crucial relationship with the United States amid intensified great power rivalry? Has President Donald Trump’s second term influenced Australia’s approach? And what can Sweden and the rest of Europe learn from Australia’s perspective on a changing world order?
