Behind the headlines: The protests in Hong Kong

Behind the headlines: The protests in Hong Kong

Ignited by an extradition bill that would have allowed criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland China, protests have been carried out in Hong Kong since this summer, rallying hundreds of thousands of people. Although the bill has been withdrawn, the protests have continued until this day. What do the protesters aim for, and what are the underlying reasons for the demonstrations?

A lecture by Tim Rühlig, Research Fellow at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI).

The seminar was moderated by Ylva Pettersson, Programme manager at UI.

This seminar is part of the seminar series ”Behind the headlines” that we arrange together with the National Museums of World Culture, aiming at a deeper understanding of current events.
