How to Survive in a New Cold War

How to Survive in a New Cold War

A roundtable discussion with Aleksander Golts and Martin Kragh on arms control and the arms race between Russia and the West. What does the future hold, and how will the military efforts of both sides develop?

Russian and NATO troops are after 40 years still withstanding in Europe. The General Staffs of both sides are preparing scenarios of exercises that leave no doubt that military efforts are directed against each other. At the same time, there is a widening gap of values between Moscow and the West. Both sides have diametrically opposed assessments to any problem of the world, and they behave as rivals in any conflict situation. New formulas for arms control are needed in order to maintain peaceful coexistence, but what will these be?

Aleksander Golts, deputy editor for web-site (Ежедневный журнал), former military analyst for the New Times magazine in Moscow.

Martin Kragh, Head of the Russia and Eurasia Programme at UI.
