Japan's Newly Adopted Peace and Security Laws

The Japan seminar series is jointly organized by the European Institute of Japanese Studies at Stockholm School of Economics, the Asia Program at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs, the Department of Asian, Middle Eastern and Turkish Studies at Stockholm University and the Swedish Defence University. It features monthly seminars on Japanese economy, politics and society. The 66th Stockholm Seminar on Japan.

Toshitaka Takeuchi will offer an overview of Japan’s Constitution-Preamble and Article 9 as well as a brief description on how the interpretation came about. How can the new interpretation, new laws and the three conditions for exercise of the right of collective self-defense be explained? What are the implications of the ongoing changes?

Toshitaka Takeuchi is a Professor at Osaka School of International Public Policy, Osaka University. He has authored and edited several books such as “Game Theory for Policy Analysis”, “Japan – US Alliance” and “Understanding International Relations: the World and Japan”.
