Economic Development in Russia and Ukraine

Economic Development in Russia and Ukraine

On May 12, 2016, the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI) organized a seminar on the economic development in Russia and Ukraine. The neighboring economies have been intertwined for decades, but the war in eastern Ukraine has caused both an economic and political deterioration between the nations.

What reforms are needed in terms of rule of law, energy efficiency, gender equality and human rights in order to improve the living standards for the general public?

Speakers:
Anders Åslund is a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council in Washington, DC, and the author, most recently, of Ukraine: What Went Wrong and How to Fix It.
Elsa Håstad is Assistant Director General at SIDA (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency).

The seminar was moderated by Martin Kragh, Senior Reseach Fellow and Head of UI’s Russia and Eurasia Programme.
