Freedom Rising: Human Empowerment and the Quest for Emancipation
The Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI) invites you to a discussion on human freedom. People have never voiced their desires for freedoms so frequently and powerfully as today. They do so not only inside but even outside democracies.
Christian Welzel identifies the desire for emancipation as the origin of the human empowerment trend. He shows when and why this desire grows strong, why it is the source of democracy, how it vitalizes civil society, rebuilds social capital, feeds humanitarian norms, enhances happiness, and helps to redirect modern civilization towards sustainable development. Welzel’s empirical research builds on cross-cultural and longitudinal evidence from the World Values Surveys and European Values Surveys.
Christian Welzel, Political Culture Research Professor at Leuphana University in Lueneburg, Germany and author of the award winning book Freedom Rising: Human Empowerment and the Quest for Emancipation, Cambridge University Press, 2013.
The discussion will be moderated by Johan Lagerkvist, Head of the Global Politics and Governance program at UI.
