European and Global Politics

TheProgramme on European and Global Politics studies European countries and organisations as actors in foreign policy, alongside thematic issues related to global challenges and international politics.

The programme combines European area studies with a global and thematic perspective. It focuses on geopolitics, European countries and institutions, as well as Europe’s relations with the wider world.

The programme also addresses global societal challenges and thematic areas that shape contemporary international politics. These include sustainable transition and climate, the economy and technological development, as well as issues of democracy and international multilateral cooperation.

The programme was established in April 2026 through a merger of the Europe Programme and the Programme for Global Politics and Security.

Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Finland and Sweden applied for membership of a military alliance dependent on nuclear weapons: NATO. This is particularly interesting because neutrality and nuclear disarmament have historically been central to Finnish and Swedish security policy and national identity. This project analyzes the nuclear and identity aspects of Finland and Sweden's NATO membership. How has disarmament policy developed in these countries after the end of the Cold War, and how has national identity been renegotiated in relation to it? How are nuclear weapons discussed in Finnish and Swedish debates on NATO membership? What is the future of nuclear disarmament within NATO?

Breaking silos – can the EU’s mission approach for climate-neutral cities accelerate energy transitions?

Forskning Innovative ideas and working methods are needed to speed up sustainable energy transitions in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement. Previous studies have shown the importance of breaking silos between institutions to accelerate this transition. This project investigates how an innovative governance approach - the EU's mission for climate-neutral cities - can increase the pace of energy transitions. For this purpose, we study two cities that have been selected to participate in the EU’s mission approach: Stockholm and Amsterdam.
