UI Brief

UI Briefs are short commentaries on international issues, events or trends related to UI's focus areas. They are written by UI staff, UI visiting researchers or other experts associated with UI. Each type of publication is subject to an in-house planning and approval process including quality control. They solely reflect the view of the author(s).

UI Paper

UI Papers are working papers and similar manuscripts reporting the results of research related to UI’s focus areas. UI Papers are written by UI researchers, visiting researchers, or other researchers wishing to publish with UI (authors are occasionally invited based on their international profile and research reputation). UI Papers enable researchers to publish and register the results of research projects fairly swiftly while retaining the rights to publish in other outlets if so desired. Research quality, readability, and relevance are the main criteria for publication. UI Papers may also include in-depth policy analyses, which are rigorously researched but less ambitious in terms of theory and scientific methodology. Each type of publication is subject to an in-house planning and approval process including quality control. They solely reflect the view of the author(s).

UI Report

UI Reports are typically papers of a non-academic kind. They are written without the requirements typically placed on academic papers. The authors of UI Reports are experts in fields that are of interest to UI. The analysis presented in an UI Report covers aspects typically not covered by other UI publications. High-quality conference reports may also be published within the series UI Reports.

Prospects and limitations for a Quad Plus Europe

This brief discusses the Quad’s agenda and how its design is tailored to the Indo-Pacific. It argues that working with the Quad will entail individual, like-minded European and Indo-Pacific countries coordinating in ad hoc, flexible formats. Such arrangements should focus on niche issues where European countries and the EU have overlapping interests with Quad members, such as Indian Ocean and maritime security or ensuring cheap, high-quality, and reliable technologies to assist developing countries’ transition to renewable energy. It concludes with a set of policy recommendations on how to further this agenda.

Could the G7 climate club work? Lessons learned from climate coalitions

Research The international climate negotiations are increasingly focusing on implementing the Paris Agreement and driving up ambition. At COP27 in Egypt a Mitigation Work Programme will be negotiated with the aim to close the emissions gap. At the same time, climate initiatives and coalitions have proliferated outside the UNFCCC in recent years. This year the G7 also decided to establish a climate club to accelerate climate action. This UI paper examines some lessons learned from climate coalitions and the implications of these for international climate cooperation in general, and the establishment of a climate club in particular.

Local Initiatives: Factors in and Lessons for Sustainable Development

Research This paper reviews scholarly literature on local initiatives for sustainable development, exploring how such initiatives succeed and become part of a wider societal transformation towards sustainability. Five factors are highlighted: capacity and learning; flexibility and profitability; solidarity and autonomy, support and access, and networks. Drawing on these factors the paper emphasizes the importance of understanding the linkages between local initiatives and the outside world; that knowledge and different types of knowledge matter; and, that a holistic approach to sustainable development is of importance.

Forskning Denna studie beskriver hur Taiwans internationella status blev en världspolitisk fråga. Den redogör för Taiwans historia, förklarar centrala begrepp som ”ett-Kina-politiken”, och beskriver hur omvärldens tolkningar och förhållningssätt i frågor kopplade till Taiwan ser ut idag. Utöver detta redogörs för hur relationen mellan Sverige och Taiwan har utvecklats under de senaste årtiondena, vilket hittills inte tycks ha gjorts i någon allmänt tillgänglig text. Slutligen diskuteras vad den svenska regeringens position innebär för universitet, företag och andra som hanterar frågor kopplade till Taiwan och Kina.

The Asian Barometer 2022: Measuring the Swedish public’s views of China, India and Japan

Research The Asian Barometer 2022 reports on a first-of-its-kind survey of Swedish public opinion about major Asian countries. We collaborated with the National SOM survey to ask members of the Swedish public a range of questions about their views of China, India, and Japan. This found a mix of views regarding these major Asian nations, with generally positive views about Japan, both negative and more positive views about India and overwhelmingly negative views of China.
