A Poststructuralist Discourse Theory of Global Politics

The Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI) and the Swedish Defence University arranged a research seminar regarding the nexus between crisis and social change and their implications for the study of global politics.

Is it possible to conceptualize the ‘crisis of the social’? How can one best understand the relationship between crisis and social change in global politics? Dirk Nabers’ approach builds on the work of the late political theorist Ernesto Laclau and his co-authored work with Chantal Mouffe. He develops the theoretical model on the basis of four interrelated and mutually constitutive elements: sedimented practices and dislocation on the one hand, as well as antagonism and the institutionalization within a so-called imaginary on the other.

Speaker
Dirk Nabers, Head of the Research Group on International Political Sociology at the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Kiel.

Discussants
Cherine Hussein, Research Fellow at UI

Tom Lundborg, Senior Research Fellow at UI and the Swedish Defence University

The seminar was moderated by Linus Hagström, Professor of Political Science at the Swedish Defence University and Senior Research Fellow at UI.
