UI's Bitte Hammargren on a field study in Qatar

During her visit, Bitte Hammargren, Head of UI's MENA programme, met with researchers from Qatar’s many academic institutions, with public officials and she visited the Al-Jazeera Research Center.

The Embassy of Sweden in Qatar would like to announce the visit to Doha of Mrs. Bitte Hammargren, Director for the MENA Region at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs, UI, on the 16th-18th of October, 2017.  

The Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI) is a highly recognized and independent think tank for research, analysis, and information on international relations and foreign policy. The Institute conducts academic and policy-focused research and is closely cooperating with the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. UI’s research is based on unbiased scientific analysis and field visits to countries of interest. Please see www.ui.se/english/ for more information.

Bitte Hammargren has extensive experience from the MENA region and has among other duties served as publisher of the Institute’s online Foreign Policy Magazine, “Utrikesmagasinet”, and has worked as a Middle East correspondent for more than ten years for one of Sweden’s most qualified daily newspapers. She is frequently participating in Swedish TV and Radio programs as an expert on the MENA region, and has also published a highly acclaimed book on the GCC in 2015. 

During Bitte Hammargren’s visit, she will meet with several important researchers from Qatar’s many academic institutions, including Dr. Mehran Kamrava, Director for the Center for International and Regional Studies at Georgetown University Qatar; Dr. Nader Kabbani, Director of Research at the Brookings Doha Center; Dr. Gerd Nonneman, Professor and previous Dean of Georgetown University Qatar; Dr. Ibrahim Fraihat, Professor at Doha Institute for Graduate Studies; Dr. Luciano Zaccara, Professor and Research Coordinator in the Gulf Studies Center at Qatar University, among others.

Bitte Hammargren will also meet with several important public officials, including H.E. Ambassador Dr. Mutlaq Al-Qahtani, Qatar’s Foreign Minister’s Special Envoy for Counterterrorism and Conflict Resolution.

A highlight in her program will be a study visit to the excellent Al-Jazeera Research Center.
