Baltic Sea Region: the dynamics of a changing playing field

On 1-3 June, 2015 the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI) on commission by the Swedish Armed forces and United States European Command (USEUCOM) organized a conference entitled "Baltic Sea Region: the dynamics of a changing playing field" in Visby, Sweden.

Against the backdrop of Russian actions in Ukraine, having created new security challenges in the Baltic Sea region and for the EU, the conference discussions aimed to deepen the understanding of the changing strategic situation and military environment in the region, as well as assessing challenges and opportunities ahead for actors that are involved in the security of the region.

General Sverker Göranson, Supreme Commander, Swedish Armed Forces, Rear Admiral Jonas Haggren, Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters and Major General Randy A. Kee, USEUCOM opened the conference, which was moderated by Anna Wieslander, UI deputy director.

During the conference, topics were discussed such as 'The Baltic Sea region as one strategic security area', 'Hybrid conflict and the evolving nature of warfare', and 'New challenges in the military environment'.
