Ukraine's Presidential Election

Ukraine's Presidential Election

Orysia Lutsevych, with the Ukraine Forum at Chatham House, and UI's Karina Shyrokykh held a roundtable discussion on Ukraine’s 2019 presidential election. Which candidate is most likely to win the election? What consequences will follow? What changes are to be expected of Ukraine’s domestic and foreign policy?

The presidential election will be the first nationwide public vote in Ukraine since the Euromaidan. Many structural issues are unresolved and the dispute with Russia prevails.

The first round of the election was held March 31. Comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy has taken the lead followed by incumbent Petro Poroshenko, a runoff with the leading two candidates will be held on April 21.  The outcome of the election will have impacts on the domestic policy as well as Ukraine’s relations to the West and Russia.

Which candidate is most likely to win the election? What consequences will follow? What changes are to be expected of Ukraine’s domestic and foreign policy?
