How will the domestic and international challenges influence the outcome of Russia’s presidential election in March 2018? Seminar with Maria Lipman and Irina Busygina.
Putin’s position for the March 2018 presidential election seems invincible, yet Russia’s domestic and foreign playground is becoming more troublesome for the Kremlin. Along with the economic recession, relations with the EU and other Western states remain severely strained. Military interventions in Ukraine and Syria, seem unlikely to settle soon. Furthermore, a variety of local protests have taken place throughout the country in 2015-2017. How will the domestic and international challenges influence the outcome of Russia’s presidential election in March 2018? Is it possible to imagine changes in Russian politics? If so, what will they be?

Maria Lipman is the Editor of COUNTERPOINT, an online journal published by the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (George Washington University); she is a Russian political analyst and commentator. Lipman’s main research interests include Russian media and state-society relations.
Irina Busygina is Professor at the Department of Political Science, Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg. Her research interests include Russia-EU relations, Russian politics, Russian foreign policy, comparative federalism and regionalism.
