China, Taiwan and the U.S. - Dynamics of Relations in the South China Sea

Most of the recent focus on the South China Sea territorial dispute has revolved around political, strategic and legal contentions between China and the US. An often ignored key actor, Taiwan, still owns the largest natural island in the Spratly Islands. Taiwan’s attitude and policy toward the South China Sea, has the potential to trigger a change also in China-US competition in the area. Moreover, the recent leadership change in Taiwan and upcoming leadership change in the US have led to some concern or worry about the evolution of the South China Sea dispute. This panel consisting of international relations and international law experts from Sweden and Taiwan will put forward a variety of facts and viewpoints for discussion.
