Benjamin is an Research Fellow in the Special Research Programme for International Studies (SFP) in UI's Asia programme. He researches North Korean society and security on the Korean peninsula. He is the team leader for a UI research project on Sweden’s relations with North Korea.
Benjamin received his PhD in History from University of Pennsylvania in 2021, with a dissertation exploring the history of surveillance and social control in North Korea, primarily built on interviews with North Korean refugees in South Korea as well as North Korean archival materials. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a non-resident fellow at the Stimson Center in Washington DC, where he researches the North Korean economy and edits the North Korean Economy Watch blog.
