Symposium on Europe's Role in a New Geopolitical Landscape
On 28 April, the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI) hosted a security policy symposium at Eric Ericsonhallen in Stockholm under the title “Europe’s moment: How to navigate in a new geopolitical landscape”. The event took place in the presence of HM The King of Sweden and gathered experts, diplomats, and peers for an afternoon of keynote addresses and panel discussions on Europe's role in a changing world.
The symposium opened with remarks from Jakob Hallgren, Director of UI. This was followed by a keynote speech from Professor Stephen Walt from Harvard Kennedy School, who addressed the shifting transatlantic relationship and the implications of U.S. policy changes for Europe.
Following the keynote, Walt joined Carl Bildt, former Prime Minister of Sweden, and Ylva Johansson, former European Commissioner for Home Affairs, for a conversation on Europe’s strategic position in the evolving global order. The discussion was moderated by Stefan Ingvarsson from UI.
UI analysts and researchers Henrik Chetan Aspengren, Åsa Malmström Rognes, and Björn Jerdén contributed to a panel on Asia’s role in the geopolitical shift, with a focus on India, Japan, and China.
A third panel discussion addressed European cohesion and trade policy strategy. The panel featured Tytti Tuppurainen, former Finnish Minister for EU Affairs and Corporate Governance; Wolfgang Ischinger, former Ambassador and President of the Munich Security Conference Foundation Council; and Anna Stellinger, Deputy Director General and Head of International and EU Affairs at the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise.
The symposium concluded with a keynote speech by Wolfgang Ischinger on the future of the European Union in light of Russia’s war against Ukraine and the new geopolitical landscape.
