The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine has once again brought nuclear-related threats to the forefront of international concern.
The IAEA’s internationally agreed safeguards system is key to verifying nations’ compliance with their pledges not to make nuclear weapons. The IAEA also has a key role in monitoring Iran’s nuclear-related commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Programme of Action (JCPOA), and it is closely following the development of the nuclear weapons programme in North Korea.
The role of the IAEA is to foster the safe and peaceful use of nuclear technology while guarding against any diversion to nuclear weapons. The IAEA also plays a key role in curbing the spread of nuclear weapons beyond the five nuclear-weapon states, in accordance with the 1968 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Ever since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the IAEA has also intensified its efforts to address the growing concerns related to nuclear safety and security in Ukraine.
A few of the issues discussed included: how the international community will deal with the nuclear risks associated with the occupied nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine; to what extent Iran is complying with its safeguards obligations and the JCPOA agreement on nuclear energy; and what the world can do in the face of the developing North Korean nuclear weapons programme.
