Dr. Raphael Cohen-Almagor is a Senior Associate Research Fellow at The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Programme at The Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI)
Raphael Cohen-Almagor received his doctorate from the University of Oxford. He served as Chair in Politics and was the Founding Director of the Middle East Study Centre (MESC) at the University of Hull. He has held many fellowships, including at the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and served as President of The Association for Israel Studies (AIS). His visiting appointments include the Yitzhak Rabin-Fulbright Visiting Professorship at UCLA School of Law and Department of Communication, Visiting Professor at the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University, and Distinguished Visiting Professor to the Faculty of Laws at University College London. He was twice a Fellow at The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (WWICS) and until recently a Global Fellow of WWICS. In 2023, he was the Olof Palme Visiting Professor at Lund University, Sweden.
Raphael co-founded Israel’s Second Generation to the Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Organization and is the founder of The University of Haifa Center for Democratic Studies, The Van Leer Jerusalem Institute Medical Ethics Think Tank, and The MESC. He has authored hundreds of publications across political science, international relations, ethics, history, sociology, education, and poetry.
