The Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI) appoints new director
The Board of The Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Christer Ahlström as new Director.
Ahlström is Doctor of Law and Associate Professor of International law at Uppsala University.
Since 2013 Ahlström is the Director-General and Agency Head of the Inspectorate of Strategic Products (ISP). Previously, he has held the position as the Deputy Director-General and Head of Department of the Department for Disarmament and Non-proliferation at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs (UD NIS). He has also served as Counsellor with the Embassy of Sweden in The Hague responsible for issues concerning the arms control treaty The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).
He was also the Deputy Director at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
In the early 1990s Ahlström was a researcher with the Special Research Programme (Särskilda Forskningsprogrammet) at UI.
“Christer Ahlström brings a great deal of experience and knowledge in areas of importance for The Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI). He has a background as a researcher, as well as operative experience in international relations and foreign affairs, especially in international law and disarmament. He also has previous experience of UI, SIPRI and the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and in addition has successfully served as the head of an agency working with analysis of international relations. In summary, Ahlström has the right background to head an institute such as UI" says the Chairman of the Board Michael Sohlman.
Christer Ahlström will start his new assignment with UI on November 1st 2018.
