Elisabeth Özdalga is associated researcher with the Middle East and North Africa Programme since July 2017.
Dr Elisabeth Özdalga was a faculty member of the Department of Sociology at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara from 1983 to 2009. For two periods she has been the Director at the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul (1999-2002 and 2009-2011). She has also held the position as a professor at Bilkent University, Ankara.
She wrote her doctoral thesis in sociology at Göteborg University about the Republican People’s Party, CHP, which was the only legal party in Turkey between the two world wars.
Her research is focused on religious and political movements in Turkey from a democratization perspective. Elisabeth Özdalga is currently working on a research, financed by the Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences, where she is studying the role of the Friday prayers in the shaping of a modern Turkish national identity.
